In India, there are over 14000 vocational training institutes; out of these, more than 2000 and 12000 are Government-run (Industrial Training Institutes, or ITIs) and privately-managed (Industrial Training Centers, or ITCs) respectively. The skill training centers were started with the objective of imparting vocational training to the aspirants who were interested in gaining technical knowledge as compared to continuing with traditional school studies.
In accordance with the 1950s Craftsmen Scheme, the training institutes were constituted by the Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET) of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Government of India.
As per the guidelines laid down by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT), the ITIs and ITCs conduct the trade courses. Accordingly, the State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT) implements the policies within the various Indian states.
The varied industries in India lack skilled manpower; thus, the ITIs and ITCs carry out skill-based training to bridge the deficiency gap. As part of the vocational training, the students develop skills in the chosen trades and become proficient to work in the respective industries to earn their livelihood. Moreover, they contribute to the country’s overall economic and social development.
The aspiring pupils have an array of trade programs to choose from. Depending on their preferences, they can enroll in the respective courses. Though, the eligibility criteria for the varied programs differ; and hence, the applicants must apply only if they are eligible for the courses. If eligible, in some states, they have to clear the entrance examination to get admission in the centers.
The vocational trade programs are conducted in a series of 4 semesters i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones. The students can check their results from NCVT’s official website. Alternatively, they can download the ‘ncvtitiresult app’ for viewing their results and also, for other information on the skill training programs, pertaining to the different Indian states.
